Ready or not

Dear Get Rich Diary,

I've been spending quite a bit of time reading about other people's iPhone development stories lately, and I must agree with the Edible Apple:

"Hard work, in and of itself, does not ensure profitability.  You have to have a product that people are willing to pay for, and unfortunately, betting the farm on what the public may or may not be interested in is always a risky proposition.  The stakes are high, but so are the rewards.  Business 101."

This is our opportunity to strike it rich.  If we are actually accomplishing that, however, is an entirely different story. My head says: YES, YES, YES!!!!!!!!!!!!! Come on!

Went to the Name Reservation Online and had a chuckle to find out that it the  Name reservation Online was offline!

On the last two days we got the name registered, company registered, domain purchased, website built and now we're working on becoming a developer with Apple, which is supposed to take AT LEAST one week.

That's it for now!

Time spent, so far: 63 hours, which equals to $3,780.

The New Dot Com Bubble

Dear Get Rich Diary,

Remember when the internet first started and how some people were smart enough to monetize it and become millionaires?

I truly believe that the Mobile industry, a.k.a: iPhone apps, games and ads will make some new millionaires too. But not as many as the actual dot-com bubble.

I was too young when the Dot-Com Bubble happened, had no business knowledge at all. Now things are different and I want to be part of the Mobile Bubble! Even if it is just a small one!

J has started working on the database for the new application and I have started the Marketing plan.

In the past days we've put 17 hours on the new project.

It's OVER!

Dear Get Rich or Die Trying Diary:

I am super pleased to announce that our first iphone app is now DONE!

We spent exactly 105 hours and we learned A LOT, for our first project I think that it was pretty good. The cost ended up at $ 6,300, which seems to be pretty good for a small and simple application as per my research.

Now it is off to start developing a money making app, yay!

By the way, did I mention that this week I've already come up with 8 new apps ideas? Yep, 'that' side of my brain refuses to shut off, LOL.

J has not been able to give me an idea of the amount of time that he will need for this new app, so I am going to guess that it will take him about 200 hours, which in real time might be more like 45 days as we juggle our work lives and our project. I just can't wait until we are able to do this on a full time basis.

The end is just the beginning!

Interesting new research just came out saying that the iphone is a chick magnet, I've gotta laugh! Read it here. To me it translates to men with iphones = men with money!

Too late?

Dear Get Rich or Die Trying Diary:

J today came to me and asked me: "do you think that it is too late to try to make money with an iPhone app? The store has been online for 2 years now".

To which I replied: "it's been only 2 years! So many new technologies among others come out and last for a while. I think that 2 years is nothing! There is a lot to be made there."

So, back I went to the computer and make another research. This is what I've found:

In 2009 $ 4.2 billion dollars where made in sales of Apps.
What is the projection you may be wondering...

In 2010 they estimate that $ 6.8 billion will be generated and $ 29.5 billion by 2013 (*)

Too late? NOT AT ALL!!!

"As smartphones grow in popularity and application stores become the focus for several players in the value chain, more consumers will experiment with application downloads," Stephanie Baghdassarian, research director at Gartner, said in a statement.

Keeping track:

How long has it taken us to develop an iphone application?

What does the future hold?

The future is a surprise box, but I am doing what I can to make it better!

I've read yesterday about a fellow entrepreneur who started last September and just made it to the top 20 paid apps in the itunes store. Very encouraging! (not that I need any extra encouragement at this point!)

That guy has been developing one new iphone app per month, which is my exact goal.

Also read someone mentioning that it took him 200 hours to build an app and cost him $ 10,000.

Our first app might be over a third done.

Keeping track:

How long has it taken us to develop an iphone application?

82 hours, so far.

How long does it cost to build an iphone app?

$ 4,920 - still unfinished.

That's it for today, I'll blog more later!

To Cheat or not to Cheat

Dear Get Rich or Die Trying Diary:

I was having a funny conversation with a male friend about fidelity and got from him the kind of answers that reaffirm my previous belief:

People cheat A LOT.

Surprise, surprise: today, while doing my Market Research about the mobile phones I was impressed to see that people have been using their smartphones more and more to set up casual encounters with someone other than their partners, meaning: to cheat!

I really did NOT expect to find anything like that on my Mobile User Market Research!

By the way, work is really happening!

J has fixed the iPhone Keyboard issue, as I knew he would!

And my Market Research was so positive that I am even more excited about our project!

Keeping track of how much it cost to develop an iPhone app:

Time: 66 hours

Money: $ 3,960

Got it!

Dear Get Rich or Die Trying Diary:

Gotta tell ya, today I DID get the focus that I needed so badly. It was a very productive day!

I started with 4 marketing pieces that I needed for the first website, and they all came out pretty good and easily.

J was facing an issue with the iPhone keyboard, apparently not as easy as he thought that it would be to fix it. But I am sure that he will do it, as he always does!

BTW: Every second into this project makes me appreciate my hubby more and more, I am so lucky to have you, J!

The littlest is starting her solid meals, but she is enjoying the spoon much better than the food, LOL.

I've been thinking about my idea of keeping track of the time and money that the apps are costing us to find out how much we make with them, but I am going to have to change it a bit. This is why: our first two iPhone apps are not the type that will make us money in the short term, so it would be difficult and unfair to measure only the first one.

I'll be keeping track of all our time and money until we break even and start getting some cash flow.

Time: 54 hrs

Money: $ 3,240

Focus, Focus

Dear Get Rich or Die Trying Diary:

I think that one of my biggest issues at the moment is to stay focused!

My head is spinning with new ideas constantly.Obviously it takes way more time to program each one of my apps and games than it does to come up with new ideas.

I've got to some how shut off my brain, well, not really, just the idea-making part of it, as I still have many other things to do.

J is really advancing on the Objective C and its been less than 50 hours still. I am really proud.

We have decided to start with an iPhone app, I just can't wait to see it.

Keeping track of how long its taken us to develop the first app and how much it costs:

Time: 44 hrs

Money: $ 2,640

The First 10 days

Dear Get Rich or Die Trying Diary:

The first 10 days of our journey (we started on April 3rd) were spent this way:

P: was all about thinking about what would make a good mobile app, researching to find out if there was already something similar (funny enough many of my ideas where already there);

J: has spent his time on trying to learn the new language, Objective C, which is needed for the programming:

P & J: brainstorming and discussing P's findings and ideas.

After the first 6 days we all got sick, even the computer, lol, and we had to skip work for the next 4 days.

It is not easy to make time for this when you already don't have much (we both work and have the 2 little ones), but when you REALLY want something you just DO IT! Even if it means getting less sleep.

Summary of the first 10 days in time and money (I'll keep track of how many hours and money it took us to make each one of our apps and games to find out how much of an investment they were):

Time: 34 hours

Money: If each hour equals $60, then our investment for these 10 days equals $2,040

That is it for today my Get Rich or Die Trying Diary.

The Intro

We are a family of 4, Mom, Dad and 2 little ones: P, J, D & B.

We live in Canada.

We are self-employed, P is in sales & marketing, J is in information technology, D is in trouble-making and B in time-hogging.

Our life is ok, middle class, living in our own home, well, kind of, as over 60% of it belongs to the bank.

I, P, am really tired of living here, too much rain, not enough sun, it feels like life is going by and not much is being done. Not too sure if many other people feel the same way. Actually, I think that many DO, they just don't do much about it.

So, I talked J into doing something about it.

The plan is to use my crazy creative mind and his tech abilities to make a company that will make mobile games and applications.

At first I tried to talk other friends into taking this path with us, but unfortunately, as I mention before, many people are not into 'wasting their time trying to change their lives'. I understand, as we don't have much, if any, time left on our hands. But we want to make it better.

Come and enjoy our journey with us!

This is it for my Get Rich or Die Trying Diary post.
